By definition, insomnia is “difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or both” and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. Insomnia is not defined by a specific number of hours of sleep that one gets, since different people have different needs for sleep.

While insomnia can be a symptom of a physical disorder and needs to be initially checked out by a physician, for most people it is an effect of tension, stress and anxiety. Lack of sleep can and usually does affect your physical well-being. Not being able to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night causes frustration, anger and at times despair.
